Moving from Atlantic Canada to Calgary

Start with the province you are leaving

Atlantic Canada includes Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. The first three are the Maritime provinces. Your starting province matters for health coverage, vehicle paperwork and the route your belongings take; your destination in Calgary determines the day-to-day fit.

Before searching listings, write down your likely workplace, housing budget, school or child-care needs and how often you expect to visit family back east. A household relocating from Halifax or Moncton may plan a different journey from one leaving Charlottetown, St. John’s or Labrador.

Treat the long-distance move as a separate project

Get written quotes for a full-service mover, a container and a smaller shipment with local replacement of bulky items. Ask each provider to specify the delivery window, storage, packing, difficult-access charges and the exact protection offered for damage or loss. Keep essential documents, medications and a first-week kit with you if your belongings will arrive later.

If you are bringing a vehicle from the island of Newfoundland, include the ferry in the route and reserve early; Marine Atlantic recommends advance reservations and explains its vehicle arrangements. A Labrador departure needs its own route plan. Check seasonal conditions, ferry schedules and travel time before choosing a mover or departure date.

For a move with children or pets, coordinate travel, temporary lodging and the availability of your Calgary home. Confirm province-specific health, vehicle and school requirements before departure.

Find the Calgary location that works every week

Map the addresses you will actually use: work, schools, child care, groceries, health care and recreation. Try the commute at your normal travel hour and consider parking or transit transfers. If you expect frequent flights east, measure the airport trip door to door, but do not let occasional travel override the routine you will live most days.

Rebuild the budget, not just the house price

Start from real homes or rentals and compare mortgage or rent, property taxes, condo fees, insurance, utilities, maintenance, transportation and child care. Add the one-time move: shipping, travel, temporary accommodation, storage and setting up a new home. If visits back east are important, include them as an annual line item. A tax difference or a single asking price cannot establish the better overall budget for your household.

Check the coverage transition for your province

• Nova Scotia: provincial guidance says coverage for a permanent move within Canada usually ends on the last day of the second month after departure; some permit holders have different rules.
• New Brunswick: Medicare guidance describes three months of coverage including the month of a permanent move within Canada.
• Prince Edward Island: PEI Health Card guidance describes coverage until the first day of the third month and advises registering in the new province within 30 days.
• Newfoundland and Labrador: the Medical Care Plan (MCP) ties eligibility to residency. Contact MCP about the effective end date for your permanent move and distinguish it from its rules for temporary travel.

For an eligible move from another province with an intention to live in Alberta for at least 12 months, Alberta says to apply for AHCIP within three months of establishing residency. Confirm the precise handoff with both plans. Arrange prescriptions, records and any necessary private coverage with the appropriate providers before you leave.

Decide whether to bring your car

Compare driving or shipping with selling and replacing the vehicle in Alberta. Get an Alberta insurance quote before the move and ask your current insurer when coverage ends. New residents must change vehicle registration within 90 days; an out-of-province inspection is normally required unless an exemption applies to the vehicle. Ask an Alberta registry agent about the documents and rules for yours. A person establishing permanent residence generally must exchange an eligible driver’s licence within 90 days.

A workable moving sequence

1. Before choosing a home: confirm work location, complete the Calgary budget and shortlist communities using daily routes.
2. Before departure: obtain moving and insurance quotes, schedule travel and shipping, check health coverage dates, and investigate schools or child care where relevant.
3. After arrival: apply for AHCIP, exchange your licence, register and insure your vehicle, set up utilities and test the new routine.
