Moving from BC to Calgary

Start with the life you have in BC

Moving from Vancouver is a different decision from leaving Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George or a smaller community. Compare the home you actually have, your current commute, family supports and regular activities with a realistic Calgary option. A lower asking price alone does not reveal whether the move improves your everyday life.

If you work remotely for a BC employer, confirm your work arrangement and hours before committing to a new address. Calgary is one hour ahead of most BC communities, although time-zone arrangements vary in parts of the province. If frequent trips back are important, include both travel cost and door-to-door time.

Choose a neighbourhood by the routes you will repeat

Map work, schools, child care, groceries, recreation and the people you expect to see regularly. Compare those routes at the time you would drive or take transit. Calgary’s communities vary substantially within the same broad district; investigate the individual street, home age, maintenance and parking before choosing.

Compare the full household budget

Use real listings to estimate mortgage or rent, property tax, condo fees, utilities, home insurance, transportation, child care and maintenance. Include moving costs, storage, temporary accommodation and travel back to BC. If a home needs another vehicle, treat that as part of its housing decision. Calgary’s winter upkeep and hail exposure also deserve attention when assessing a particular property and insurance quote.

BC generally charges 7% PST on taxable goods and services; Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Federal GST still applies where required. Plan the trip across the mountains

Get written quotes for moving, a container or a smaller shipment with replacement of bulky items. Compare delivery windows, storage, valuation coverage and charges for stairs or difficult access. If leaving Vancouver Island, include the ferry and a contingency for weather or timing. Keep prescriptions, documents and a first-week kit with you if your household goods will arrive later.

For a drive through BC in colder months, check designated winter-tire and chain routes for your particular dates and highways, as well as current road conditions. Do not assume a summer travel time will hold during a winter move.

Coordinate MSP and Alberta health coverage

BC’s guidance for people leaving permanently explains how to notify the Medical Services Plan (MSP). For a move to another Canadian province, BC’s coverage normally continues through the remainder of the departure month and the following two months. Confirm your own effective dates, especially if your household has temporary-resident status or other special circumstances.

Alberta says an eligible person moving from another province and intending to live here for at least 12 months should apply for AHCIP within three months of becoming a resident. Alberta coverage normally begins on the first day of the third month after establishing residency. Arrange prescriptions, records and any supplementary coverage before leaving BC.

Make an ICBC-to-Alberta vehicle plan

Get an Alberta auto-insurance quote before you arrive. ICBC advises people moving away permanently to speak to an Autoplan broker before departure and update their policy; your BC licence remains valid for a transition period of 90 days. Ask how your policy covers the journey and the move, and coordinate effective dates with your Alberta insurer.

Alberta requires a new resident to change vehicle registration within 90 days. An out-of-province inspection usually applies, though some vehicles may qualify for an exemption; ask a registry agent to check your vehicle. If you are establishing permanent Alberta residence, exchange your eligible licence within 90 days. ICBC explains that cancelling Autoplan involves returning BC plates to a broker, so confirm the practical sequence before your trip.

A BC-to-Calgary moving sequence

1. First: confirm work, housing budget and a shortlist based on real weekday routes.
2. Before departure: obtain moving and insurance quotes; arrange travel, MSP notification, medical continuity and school or child-care research.
3. After arrival: apply for AHCIP, obtain Alberta insurance and registration, exchange your licence, complete the ICBC cancellation process and set up your daily routine.
