Begin with your Manitoba baseline
A move from Winnipeg, Brandon or a smaller Manitoba community can change your job opportunities, housing choices and family routine. Write down what you currently spend on housing, commuting, child care and visits to people who matter. Then identify the Calgary workplace and housing type you need. Manitoba is one hour ahead of Calgary, a small but useful detail for remote work and regular calls home.
Choose your location by the routes you will travel
Calgary’s distance from one end to the other can make a good-looking listing a difficult weekday choice. Map each workplace, school or child-care option, regular appointments and recreation. Test your actual commute at the hours you expect to travel. Include parking, transit transfers and whether another vehicle would be needed.
Established areas
Compare mature streets and amenities with home age, repairs and the route to work.
Newer areas
Compare floor plans with construction, school access, transit and the trip to established services.
Transit options
Measure the whole door-to-door trip, including walking, transfers and service hours.
Beyond Calgary
Compare regional housing with the complete commute, services and property upkeep.
Use our Calgary neighbourhood guide and Neighbourhood Compass to narrow your search, then investigate each property and street.
Compare the full household budget
Use actual Calgary homes or rentals to estimate mortgage or rent, property taxes, condo fees, utilities, insurance, repairs and transportation. Add winter expenses, child care and return trips to Manitoba. Keep the one-time move separate: movers, storage, travel, temporary housing and setup costs can be substantial.
Manitoba’s general retail sales tax is 7% on taxable goods and services, while Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Federal GST still applies where required. Tax is only one part of affordability; compare take-home income and the complete housing and transportation budget. Our Calgary cost-of-living guide provides a fuller framework.
Should you rent first or buy on arrival?
Renting first gives you time to test Calgary’s neighbourhoods and commute, but may mean a second move and storage. Buying directly can suit a household with a settled job location, financing and clear housing requirements. Get Alberta-specific mortgage and closing-cost advice. For a condo, review the documents and financial position; for any home, budget for inspection and maintenance.
Coordinate MPI and Alberta vehicle coverage
Manitoba Public Insurance explains how to obtain a driver abstract and request cancellation after obtaining new out-of-province documents. Autopac does not cancel automatically when a vehicle is registered elsewhere. Arrange Alberta insurance before the switch, and confirm effective dates with both insurers so you do not leave a coverage gap.
Alberta generally requires out-of-province vehicles to be registered within three months. Its 2026 inspection guide includes a possible New West Partnership exemption for eligible Manitoba private passenger vehicles: those in the current model year plus the three preceding model years, or qualifying older vehicles with a Manitoba government mechanical inspection from the past 90 days. Conditions and exclusions apply. Ask an Alberta registry agent to assess your exact vehicle before paying for an inspection. Permanent residents must generally exchange an eligible Manitoba driver’s licence within 90 days.
Health coverage, schools and family needs
Manitoba Health says coverage normally continues for the rest of the month of departure and the next two months; temporary foreign workers can have different rules. Alberta says an eligible person moving from another province who intends to stay at least a year must apply for AHCIP within three months. Notify Manitoba Health and apply promptly in Alberta. Arrange prescriptions and medical records before the move.
Check current school designations and registration before committing to an address. Contact child-care providers about spaces and fees; Alberta’s child-care information is a starting point.
A sensible moving sequence
- First: confirm work arrangements, calculate the complete budget and shortlist communities by daily routes.
- Before departure: obtain moving quotes, investigate housing, schools and child care, and organize medical continuity and Alberta insurance.
- After arrival: apply for health coverage, exchange the licence, register the vehicle, finish MPI cancellation and update accounts and addresses.
