Contact the relevant school authority directly about your children’s eligibility, program continuity, capacity and transportation before signing a lease or purchase agreement.

RAMQ health and prescription coverage have different end dates

RAMQ says that, after a permanent move to another Canadian province, Quebec health insurance normally ends on the first day of the third month following your arrival. It instructs movers to contact RAMQ and return their health insurance card. Confirm the exact dates for your household.

Prescription drug coverage needs separate attention. RAMQ states that eligibility under Quebec’s public prescription drug insurance plan ends on the departure date for a person taking up residence elsewhere. Do not assume the drug plan follows the longer health-plan transition. Speak to RAMQ, your pharmacist and any employer or private insurer before leaving, especially if anyone relies on regular medication.

Alberta says eligible newcomers from another province who intend to live here for at least a year must apply for AHCIP within three months of establishing residency. Arrange records and ongoing care, and check coverage dates and prescription benefits directly.

Coordinate SAAQ, Alberta insurance and registration

Get an Alberta vehicle-insurance quote before leaving Quebec. Alberta generally requires an out-of-province vehicle to be registered within three months, and an inspection is usually required unless a specific exemption applies. Ask an Alberta registry agent what your vehicle needs and use Alberta’s vehicle instructions.

After registering your vehicle in Alberta or selling it outside Quebec, follow the SAAQ cancellation process; the registration does not disappear merely because you have moved. Coordinate coverage dates with your insurers. If you establish permanent Alberta residence, exchange an eligible Quebec driver’s licence within 90 days.
